The Disciplinary Board has announced the appointment of 38 new Hearing Committee members. The Disciplinary Board welcomes the new members, and thanks the retiring members for their service.
Hearing Committee members are volunteers who perform a vital function in the disciplinary process. In addition to sitting for many hours in intense hearings and spending many more hours in preparation, deliberation and writing, Hearing Committee members are involved in the review of cases to determine whether lawyers should be subject to private discipline, or whether the cases should go to full hearings and possible public discipline. This requires review of extensive files and detailed legal and factual analysis. It is not an easy task to take responsibility for making judgments that will affect people's lives and futures, but Hearing Committee members shoulder this burden and carry it out as a form of voluntary service to the profession and the public. The Disciplinary Board appreciates their contribution, and they deserve the public's recognition as well.
