The Disciplinary Board is an independent agency funded by the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania and consists of 16 members, 14 attorneys and two non-lawyers from across the state. It assists the Supreme Court in carrying out its exclusive jurisdiction over the licensing and discipline of attorneys in Pennsylvania. The members meet regularly to decide cases, policies and board administrative matters.
Recently, a national legal reform group rated Pennsylvania's attorney disciplinary system fifth in the United States, as well as the nation's most improved. One of the goals for the Disciplinary Board is to continue the improvement.
"We need to continue to build on the transparency and reform started by Lou Teti, Marv Rudnitsky and Gary Gentile," Newman said. "I am very proud to be involved with such an integral part of the Pennsylvania legal system."
A Philadelphia resident, Jonathan Newman currently practices law in Obermayer, Rebmann, Maxwell and Hipple's litigation department, with a concentration on commercial litigation and corporate law. He graduated summa cum laude from Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, and completed law school at the University of Pennsylvania.
Newman has been serving as chairman of the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board (PLCB) since August of 2002. He has developed major marketing and alcohol education programs. Since leading the PLCB, Newman has effectively led efforts in creating Pennsylvania as a Wine-Friendly State. He also serves on the board of the Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corporation and the National Alcohol Beverage Control Association.
The Disciplinary Board's goals are to protect the general public, maintain a high standard of integrity in the legal profession, and safeguard the reputation of the courts of Pennsylvania. The Disciplinary Board was created by the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania to review conduct and assure compliance by all attorneys to the Pennsylvania Rules of Professional Conduct.
